Blue Soap

How's this for bargain of the year. Fourth Draw Down and Sulk, 2 of the best albums of the eighties in a box with loads of extra tracks for £6 in Fopp, or whatever it's called. I have both of these on vinyl, buthaven'tt listened to them for years. Completely forgotten how murky andclaustrophobicc they are, which I mean in a good way. I really dig The Glamour Chase as well, but the production is much more bright and shiny, while these sound like they were recorded in a partially flooded basement in winter. They sound damp and chilly, which I mean in a good way.

Interestingly I was listening to these last night in a herbal stupor while watching Shaolin Soccer with the sound turned down. It actually worked rather better than you might think. At one point a mass street-dancing scene was perfectly insynchc with Message Oblique Speech. Shaolin Soccer, by the way, is an absolutely great drugs movie.

Nice records indeed - I actually spun them up only the other month - love the murkey production !

My fave from that lot will alweays be The Affectionate Punch - still holding for safe keeping Mr. Vaughns copy here - not too sure if he still wants it back though ...

Yeah that was a good one too. I've actually got 2 different versions of it. Did a complete remix. Wonder if they're worth any money...

Not heard the remix - when was that out out ?

I have a really terrible 12 inch they did of Heart of Glass - crap stuff really - some white label thhang called Fire to Ice - not sure I have spun this one ..

but the best of the bunch is for sure the Message Oblique Speech/Face Down 12 incher - what a rather strange audio listen that Face Down side is for sure ... playing Message right now at 33 instead of 45 - and the opening bass/drum riff sound uber cool at this speed ... sort of doped out dubstep ...

maybe we should pool the lot and offer a bumper Associates package up for sale on ebay !! might make a mint ..

The remix came out in 1982, the original in 1980. The cover is different and they cleaned the sound up a lot, but it's the same songs.

Yeah I have that 12" of 'Heart of Glass' and it's awful. There is a much better version on 'The Glamour Chase'. This is after Rankine left, so it's basically a McKenzie solo album, but it's got some really great stuff on it. Worth checking out if you haven't heard it. It didn't get released until years after it was made. I had a grotty cassette copy for ages.
